On what turned out to be a nightmarish Friday the 13th, over 3,000 cruise ship passengers, and more than 1,000 cruise ship employees escaped from the sinking Costa Cruise Lines ship “Costa Concordia” on January 13, 2012, off the coast of the Italian island of Giglio. The cruise ship had been three hours at sea when it ran aground.

Many of the passengers who escaped did so into the dark sea. Life boats were limited due to the vessel listing onto its side-preventing the launching of life boats that left passengers having to fend for themselves-to jump into the sea.
